It refers to a specific style of music in 13th-century France which features counterpoint, the art of mixing vocal components simultaneously. Ars Antiqua genres include: organum, clausula, conductus, motet, hocjet and cantilena. The most significant of these is the motet, which is usually a Latin religious choral composition.
